MMUST Donates Ksh 50,000 Towards the Annual Joint Thanksgiving Service for Uniformed Disciplined Services

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has donated a cheque of Fifty Thousand Kenya shillings (50,000) towards the Annual joint thanksgiving service for uniformed disciplined services. The ceremony will take place on Saturday 25th June 2022 at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Kakamega. While issuing the cheque on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration and Finance Prof. John Kuria Thuo, noted that uniformed officers are MMUST’s key stakeholders who ensure the safety of staff and students.

MMUST is Set to Be the Major Training Hub for Emergency Professionals in Kenya, Says Malteser International

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology is set to be the major training hub for emergency professionals in Kenya. Discussions for equipping an ultra-modern skills lab by Malteser International (MI), in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedic Sciences (SONMAPS) are underway. On Tuesday, 21^st June, 2022, MMUST hosted partners from MI to discuss the lab, which will be funded through the Upesi Health Project. The key drivers of the MMUST-MI collaboration are Ms.  Joy China of MI Kenya and MMUST’s Dr. Tecla Sum.

Kenya- UK Health Alliance (KUKHA) Consultative Meeting, Nairobi.

The VC, Prof. Solomon Shibairo, participated in the Kenya UK Health Alliance consultative meeting held in Nairobi on 20th June, 2022. He was accompanied by MMUST’s Dean, School of Medicine, Dr. Donald Kokonya. Earlier on 19^th June, 2022, Dr. Kokonya attended a pre-Conference meeting and networking at Safari Park on 19/06/2022.

Some of the UK partners who were part of this international meeting included Wellcome Trust UK, University of Plymouth, Staffordshire University, University of Manchester, University of Nottingham, Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and Alder Hey Hospital.

The Alliance aims to provide a collaborative platform for Healthcare providers to enhance health education and service provision in the Country, in line with the Universal Health Coverage agenda.

MMUST’S Mr. James Wakungwi Sakwa Nominated to the Examination and Certification Committee of the Regional Training and Certification Program for Biosafety and Biosecurity Professionals

MMUST’S Aids Control, Gender and Disability Mainstreaming Unit Committee Pays Courtesy Visit to Chief Officer, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, County Government of Kakamega.

On 22^nd June, 2022, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) AIDS Control, Gender and Disability Mainstreaming Unit Committee paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Officer, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, County Government of Kakamega Ms. Dorine Amwoga. The visit was aimed at setting the ground for possible partnership between the two institutions.

The team was received by the Director, Education Support, Mr. Victor Shilisia. Representing the Chief Officer, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the Human Resource Manager, Ms. Jackline Athieno Othieno expressed her delight in being associated with an institution of Higher Learning noting that she has seen MMUST grow to become the first public University in Kenya with a registered TVET institute. “There has been a low female representation in STEM-related occupations which has, in turn, affected the choice of fields selected by the female students. This partnership will ensure we reach those students and encourage them to participate in STEM-related occupations,” said Ms. Athieno.

MMUST's Alcohol and Drug Abuse Committee Equips Members With Drug Abuse Intervention Skills

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Alcohol and Drug Abuse Committee has today 21 June 2022 commenced a five (5) day workshop for purposes of equipping members with drug abuse intervention skills. The workshop, which was sponsored by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), was held at the Main Catering Unit (MCU) Boardroom.  This key event in the University’s calendar themed  was organized by the committee chairperson, Dr. Dennis Omayio.  

The event targeting workers is geared towards preventing, controlling and mitigating impacts of drug abuse in Kenya. This is carried out under key thematic areas, namely, Public Education and Advocacy, Counselling and Rehabilitation, Compliance, Quality Control and Risk Management as well as Research and Policy Development.

MMUST Students Among the 2022 SUSI Cohort Mentorship Program at University of Delaware, USA

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology students are among the just concluded Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) mentorship program at the University of Delaware, United States of America (USA). SUSI is an intensive short-term mentorship program for female student leaders in developing countries.

The SUSI program began on 1^st June, 2022 to 15^th June, 2022, and aims at providing a deeper understanding of the culture, Education for self-reliance to groups of Undergraduate student leaders, while simultaneously enhancing their leadership skills. The selection of these students involved a keen interview that was chaired by the US Embassy Attaché to Kenya and two panelists from MMUST, namely; Prof. John Muoma and Mr. Moses Onyango.

MMUST’s Dr. Nicodemus Nyandiko Appointed as Expert to the Global Platform on Disaster Displacement Advisory Committee!!

We are delighted to inform you that Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology’s risk mitigation expert, Dr. Nicodemus Nyandiko, has been appointed to the advisory committee of the global Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD). This appointment was effected as from 28^th May, 2022.

PDD is a State-led initiative, based in Switzerland, which works towards better protection for people displaced across borders in the context of disasters and climate change.

The Advisory Committee consists, inter alia, of individuals and representatives of international and regional organizations, research institutions, academia, private sector, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other civil society stakeholders. Dr. Nyandiko’s appointment effectively places MMUST in the league of disaster displacement giants in the world.
