MMUST'S SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES TAKES LEAD IN REVIEW OF ACADEMIC PROGRAMS IN TANDEM WITH INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology’s School of Arts and Social Sciences (SASS) has taken the lead in reviewing the institution’s academic programs. SASS held its review in a fruitful workshop from 29th to 30th April, 2021 at Farm View Hotel in Busia County. The event was graced by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo, who emphasized on the need to review programs to conform to the Commission for University Education (CUE) standards.

COVID-19 AND THE WORLD OF WORK - FKE WORKSHOP WESTERN REGION AGM

homeThe Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) Western region held their 40th branch Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday 21st April 2021. The theme of the AGM was ‘Covid-19 and the world of Work’.

During the AGM, the Dean School of Business(SOBE), Dr. Robert Egessa was the guest speaker where he talked about ‘Managing Enterprises in a Complex Business Environment’.

FKE is a representative member association for employers in Kenya. The FKE Western region has over 50 members. Present at the workshop was Ag. Labour Commissioner Ms. Hellen Apiyo, who doubled as the Chief Quest, the FKE President, Dr. Habil Olaka, FKE Executive Director Mrs. Jacqueline Mugo, and FKE Western Region President Dr. Margaret Oloo.

MMUST FUNDED RESEARCH PROJECT SET TO UPSCALE POSTGRADUATE COMPLETION RATES

A team from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology is working on a research that will revolutionize postgraduate programs and ensure timely completion rates by postgraduate students. The research team led by Dr. Frida Miruka hosted a workshop on Friday 23rd April 2021 at Bishop Stam Pastoral Center, Kakamega. The purpose of the workshop was to validate the findings for their MMUST-funded research on ‘Investigation of Factors Affecting Postgraduate Completion Rates at MMUST’. This is among the various Institutional funded research projects aimed at driving the research agenda in the University

MMUST RECEIVES EQUIPMENT DONATIONS WORTH KSHS. 25 MILLION FROM KROGH OPTIKK, NORWAY

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology’s Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences has received specialized equipment donations from Krogh Optikk, Norway, valued at approximately Kshs. 25 Million. As stated by Ms. Sheila Nangena, a member of staff in the Department, these machines were donated as a result of an ongoing collaborative project between MMUST, the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) and Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI), Australia.

MMUST STUDENT LEADERSHIP TAKEN THROUGH ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE SENSITIZATION TRAINING

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology eight (8) Students Executive Council members and forty-two (42) peer educators were taken through a three-day Alcohol and Drug Abuse Training which kicked off on Wednesday 14th April to Friday 16th April 2021 in MCU 001.

The workshop, which was organized by the office of the Dean of Students was themed “Eradicating Alcohol and Drug Abuse in Institutions of Higher Learning”, and was aimed at sensitizing student leadership and the student councillors on the effects of alcohol and drug abuse and how they can be ambassadors against this menace. The 50 participants were taken through a number of topics including, Current Status of Alcohol and Drug Abuse among the Kenyan Youths, Vulnerability and Progress into Addiction, Relationship between Drug Abuse and Crime, Social Challenges Emanating from Drug Abuse, Rehabilitation Process, Life Skills for Managing Drug Abuse, as well as Institutional Support Programs for Alcohol and Drug Abuse within MMUST.

MMUST’S PROF. ASENATH SIGOT CLINCHES THE COVETED CARNEGIE AFRICAN DIASPORA FELLOWSHIP AWARD

MMUST’s Prof. Asenath Sigot has clinched the coveted Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program Award. This has effectively propelled MMUST’s research and academic profile into the foreground of the global research arena. Prof. Sigot has been partnered with Dr. Billystrom Jivetti from University of New Mexico. Prof. Sigot is a Professor of Nutritional Sciences in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, School of Public Health, Biomedical Sciences & Technology (SPHB&T). She is an ardent researcher who has published extensively in the field of Nutrition and Health besides carrying out top notch research. Prof Sigot is indeed the right person to steer this project for MMUST.

MMUSTAA AMENDED CONSTITUTION UNDERGOES VALIDATION BY THE EXECUTIVE MEMBERS IN KISUMU

MMUST Alumni Association amended constitution has undergone validation by the Executive Members in Kisumu. The two-day workshop which was organized by the office of the Director Career Services kicked off today Friday 16th April 2021 and will run to tomorrow Saturday 17th April 2021.

Addressing the workshop, Ag Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo said he fully supports the progress being made in the amendment of the MMUSTAA constitution and was confident the workshop outcome will be a good document that will transform MMUSTAA. The Vice Chancellor further said that he is looking forward to an amended MMUSTAA constitution that will reflect inclusivity, diversity and have the face of Kenya as far as MMUSTAA leadership is concerned.

MMUST’S EXPERT PARTICIPATES IN DELIBERATIONS FOR PROPOSED COLLEGE OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SPECIALISTS

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) was adequately represented at the East, Central and Southern Africa-Health Community (ECSA-HC) consultations on the establishment of the proposed College of Medical Laboratory Specialists. The event was held on 11th February 2021 in Arusha, Tanzania.

Mr. James Wakungwi Sakwa, a Senior Medical Laboratory Specialist in the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences and the Chairperson of the Interim Committee for the proposed College, paid a courtesy call to Prof.Yoswa M. Damabisya, the Director-General of ECSA-HC, together with LR Dr. Khalide Azam-Senior Laboratory Specialist and Dr. Martin Matu-Project Coordinator. During the fruitful deliberations, Prof. Damabisya emphasized the need for the inclusion of core competencies in the Curricula as well as working hand in hand with respective national authorities in order to ensure the process of establishing the proposed College moves on smoothly, as long as comparability and equivalence are catered for within countries.

MMUSO LEADERSHIP TAKEN THROUGH ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE SENSITIZATION TRAINING

The office of the Dean of students has organized a three-Day MMUSO leadership and student Peer Educators Sensitization training on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, taking place in the University Main Catering  Unit (MCU 001).
 
The training, which was officially opened by the Ag.  Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics and Student Affairs (DVC ASA), Prof. Peter Odera, who doubled as the chief guest kicked off on 14th April 2021 and will run through to Friday 16th April 2021. The training will be facilitated by different experts including representatives from The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA)
