MMUST Support Staff Undergo Capacity Building Training on Skills, Retirement and Culture Change for Improved Service Delivery

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Support Staff underwent capacity building training on skills, retirement, and culture change from 9th to 10th March 2023 at the Farm View Hotel, Busia. The aim of the training was to equip them with the skills and behavior change for improved service delivery at the University. This phase I training organized by the Human Resource Department drew participants working in various sections of the University including Assistant Clerks, Masons, Janitors, Kitchen Attendants, Grounds men, Artisans, and Office Assistants.

The training was graced by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo who appreciated the staff for their hard work and commitment. He urged them to uphold core values such as integrity, professionalism, and collegiality while serving in their respective sections. The Vice-Chancellor stressed decent dressing and office etiquette as key considerations at the workplace.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration and Finance), Prof. John Kuria Thuo, encouraged the staff to embrace teamwork and be procedural while addressing issues affecting them at work.  He added that time management is key to effective and efficient work outcomes.

In his presentation, ‘Disciplinary Processes and Staff Welfare Issues’, Mr. Josephat Shigogodi who represented the Registrar Administration, pointed out that discipline is the pillar of healthy industrial relations, and that the promotion and maintenance of employee discipline is critical for the smooth functioning of an organization. He emphasized proper service delivery at all cadres of professionalism. In addition, he advised the employees to embrace cultural diversity in the workplace.

According to the Assistant Registrar of Administration, Mr. Gregory Muluta, such training is key to improved performance and knowledge of Human Resources procedures. He noted that the fundamental indicators of positive employee productivity are positive attitude and behavior as well as knowledge of employee rights. Therefore, these are key drivers to effective and efficient work performance as required by the University.

The participants were trained on various topics including; ‘Organization Culture & Behavior Change’- by Dr. Noel Malanda, ‘Records Management, Planning & Organizing Skills’- by Ms. Ruth Omega, ‘Occupation, Health &Safety’- by Mr. Gregory Lidzanga, ‘Time Management, Stress Management, Counselling Skills & Critical Thinking Skills’- Prof. Kenneth Otieno‘Career Progression, Training &Placement’- Mr. Silas Magonya, ‘Communication Skills and Protocol Etiquette’‘Public Relations and Customer Care Skills’- Dr. Lydia Anyonje‘Team Building Skills’- Ms. Edna Kwamboka and ‘Psychological Planning for retirement and Financial Management’- CPA Jared Rading.

Other notable personalities present were; Ms. Lilian Andeyo, Mr. Kipkemboi Chebii, Mr. Felix Ajuoga, Mr. Douglas Shimonyere, Ms. Linet Tuyia, and Ms. Joyce Afuma.

Indeed, such training minimizes an over-reliance on experts as sources of knowledge, resources, and solutions to issues affecting the University. This discourages dependency relationships, therefore encourages the support staff to take action on local issues among them in order to increase productivity at the workplace.

New Dawn on Kefinco Estate as MMUST and County Police Joint Efforts ‘Birth’ the New Kefinco Police Patrol Base

The joint efforts of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology’s management and the Kakamega County police have given ‘birth’ to the new Kefinco police patrol base, ushering in a new dawn for the residents of Kefinco estate.  This was evidenced as the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo presented the key to the police post premises to the County Police Commander-Kakamega County, Mr. Joseph Kigen in a colourful ceremony on 13th March 2023 at Kefinco estate.

The establishment of the police patrol base was aimed at curbing insecurity cases among students and members of the community living in Kefinco. The patrol base will be manned by six (6) police officers drawn from the National Police Service, with room for expansion and addition of more officers in the next financial year.

Speaking during the event, Prof. Shibairo noted that peace and security are key in the development of our nation. He thanked the Kakamega County security, under the leadership of Mr. Joseph Kigen, the County Police Commander-Kakamega County, for the good working relationship with the University.

Prof. Shibairo also stated that security is every individual’s responsibility as he challenged the students to understand how to handle matters of sexuality and relationships. He pointed out that love triangles have been a leading cause of insecurity among students. “I urge all our students to refrain from drugs and alcohol abuse. I encourage you to live in residential areas approved by the University as precautionary measures to ensure your security,” he said.   

The Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic and Students Affairs, Prof. Hussein Golicha noted that Kefinco estate accommodates nearly 75% of MMUST’s students who reside outside the University premises. He stated that it has been difficult for the students residing in the area to cope with the rising cases of insecurity as he extended his division’s appreciation to the fact that a solution has been established to curb the insecurity menace.

Additionally, the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Administration and Finance - Prof. John Kuria Thuo, shared that he hopes the facility will enhance the security of the students as well as that of the host community. He promised that the University will continue to improve on the facility so that it can handle the required capacity.

Speaking on behalf of the security personnel, Mr. Joseph Kigen, the Kakamega County Police Commander, thanked the University and the church for working together to see through the construction of the patrol base. He shared his team’s commitment, saying that they will uphold their duties to the people by serving the community, safeguarding their lives and property as well as protecting them against threat and violence.

“We will appreciate the great efforts you have made by ensuring that we do as per our mandate to ensure that safety is provided to all students and members of the public who reside here,” said Mr. Kigen.   

Further, he encouraged the students to report any suspicious incidences or activities for immediate intervention by the police.

Rev. Prof. Willis Otuya commended the Full Gospel Churches of Kenya - Kakamega under the leadership of Bishop John Albert Odinga for the support they have given to the community.  “The church becomes relevant when it is directly talking to issues of community. I am grateful that Full Gospel Churches of Kenya Kakamega has extended a hand in supporting initiatives by security agencies, to offer security to our students and members of this community,” he stated.

On the other hand, Bishop Odinga commended the teams for the joint effort that has brought forth a solution to the community of Kefinco.

“Insecurity has been rampant in our community and it is our prayer that we are going to have the security we have been yearning for. We are going to work together with the officers deployed here, by actively and timely reporting any incidences of insecurity to ensure that we have maximum security in the region,” he noted.

It is worth noting that the newly elected MMUSO leaders, the Chairperson, Mr. Benjamin Mutisya, MMUSO Secretary General, Ms. Rose Natalie Atieno and Ms. Teresia Mutisya represented the students at the event. Additionally, the newly established Kefinco Police Patrol Base will be run by Mr. Samson Kandie together with his team to ensure maximum security in the area.   

Present during the event was the University’s security team led by Chief Security Officer, Dr. Julius Mabia, Security Officer, Mr. Benedict Shitera, Mr. Manoah Boniface, MMUST’s estates team, as well as the Office of the Dean of Students. The church was also represented by the Associate Pastor, Mr. Benson Kisiangani.

Dr. Rose Opiyo Mentors Sironga Girls’ Student Council on Prudent Leadership Through Her Agency Dubbed 'ROPAK Consultancies'

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Senior lecturer- Dr. Rose Opiyo, on 12th March 2023, conducted an intensive mentorship training to the Sironga Girls’ Student Council on prudent leadership at the Sunshine Hotel, Kericho. This was done through her consultancy agency dubbed ‘ROPAK Educational Counselling and Training Consultancy Services’ which offers various services including Academic Counselling, Peer Counselor’s Mentorship, Student Council Leadership Training, Career Coaching as well as Teachers' and Students' Mental/Wellness. This event is part of the community outreach activities and the role of an educator in impacting society.

Dr. Opiyo took the participants through various leadership topics such as Leadership Persona where she urged the student leaders to have a deeper purpose in identifying their source of leadership and to have the essential values that guide their behavior. This enables them to have a balance in responding to the most challenging leadership situations.

While training on ‘Diving Deeper into School Leadership’, Dr. Opiyo stated that the ultimate success of an institution is dependent on the leadership of its executive.

“There are many different types of leaders. There are those who take the lead via verbal communication, whilst others lead by showcasing their skills in person. In order to successfully maintain and lead human capital, you need to develop strong relationships and a positive working culture,” advised Dr. Opiyo.

Similarly, Dr. Opiyo took the participants through a session on Mastering the Art of Leadership. She urged the students’ leaders to apprehend the most crucial virtues in leadership which are key in comprise of empathy, goal-oriented, honesty, humility, selflessness, and responsible. She further challenged the students’ council to have a proper balance of academics and leadership in order to excel.

Dr Opiyo was accompanied by three MMUST students who are her mentees.; Non- Resident Female Representative (Public Relations and Creative Advertising) - Ms. Riziki Yvonne, Mr. Joe Gift, and Ms. Celestine Asen-pursuing Bachelor’s Degrees in Criminology and Criminal Justice, Optometry, and Vision Sciences respectively. In the process of mentoring the young leaders, the trio had an opportunity to learn and sharpen their skills further.

This training which saw the one hundred and twenty (120) students undergo a comprehensive mentorship program, provided a good opportunity for the University to market its academic programs. The event was crowned with an award of certificates to all the participants for undergoing leadership training.

MMUST Rugby Team Holds a Meeting With Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs to Discuss the Welfare of the Team

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology through the department of sports science hosted a meeting with the MMUST rugby team on 9th   March 2023, in an effort to discuss some of the issues and challenges pertaining to the university’s rugby team. This meeting was coordinated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs Prof Hussein Golicha, and MMUST rugby team Senior coach Dr. Ochieng Ahaya. 

Some of the challenges discussed during the meeting were; budget constraints where the budget for the team seems to be very limited as each player gets Khs. 2000 allowance, unavailability of the gym facility for the team members, improvement of allowances, medication cover for the players, sponsorship, and issues of integrated marketing.

Speaking at the meeting, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Hussein Golicha expressed his gratitude to the University Management for the support they have accorded the Rugby team.

 “We are proud of this team and I assure you of our support. We appreciate your commitment and hard work that has seen us shine in the Kenya Cup. Let us take this as a turning point and I will make sure that you all get what you deserve,” said Prof. Golicha.

The MMUST rugby team coach Dr. Ochieng Ahaya addressed the way forward and mentioned good planning; which entails giving the rugby team some insurance, looking for the funds to take the team out, and bringing in the marketing aspect. “This team is focused and our aim is to be visible and become a tool that the University use for marketing. This team is very respected in the country and we are looking forward to the Kenya 7s because we are confident that we are going to do well,” said Dr. Ochieng. 

He further applauded the rugby team for the work well done urging them to stay focused. He noted that the MMUST team is implementing the use of technology such as online sites for more visibility. Additionally, Dr. Ahaya noted that Kabras Sugar Company paid a total amount of 100,000 shillings for five students at Masinde Muliro University who are players in our team.

The  Senior Administrative Assistant, Dean of Students, Mr. Oscar Waswa addressed most issues raised by the team. “So much has been mentioned by the captains and the coaches and most of the issues mentioned are very real. The issues of food have been mentioned and we believe that they shall be addressed.  At an opportune time we shall revisit to see their articles and their purpose so that we are able to address what touches on the team so that we can have the welfare of these students and other MMUST students in order to have a win-win situation for all of us,” said Mr. Oscar.

With such forums, MMUST can look forward to winning more rugby games and being more visible in our country. Indeed, MMUST embracing our rugby team will certainly prosper our dream as a University.

MMUST’s Aids Control, Gender and Disability Mainstreaming Unit Advocates for Inclusion of People With Disabilities in the University System During Disability Awareness Day

The Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology’s AIDS Control, Gender, and Disability Mainstreaming Unit (ACGDMU) continues to advocate for the inclusion of People with Disabilities (PWDs) in the University as they celebrate Disability Awareness Day which was conducted on 8th March, 2023. The event themed, 'Transforming Solutions for Inclusive Development; the Role of Fueling an Accessible and Equitable World' was marked by a procession from the University Library to the Graduation Square where the exercise was held. This was graced by the Registrar (Planning, Research, and Innovation), Prof. Alice Ndiema who was representing the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Planning, Research, and Innovation), Prof. Charles Mutai.

Speaking during the event, Prof. Ndiema noted that the University has ensured the inclusion of the PWDs in the infrastructural development. She commended the work done by the Unit in ensuring the welfare of the PWDs in the University. “The Unit touches every member of society. Society ignores PWDs but most of us are disabled in one way or the other. This day is important to all of us, let us walk together and support each other,” she urged. She emphasized the need for establishing a Directorate and a Centre in the University where PWDs can access more equipment.

The National Council for Persons with Disabilities Officer (Kakamega County), Ms. Priscah Akoth who was accompanied by Mr. Andrew Simiyu, noted that the Council is committed to supporting the PWDs to ensure their comfort in society. She highlighted the activities that the Council offers to the PWDs including; registration of all PWDs, empowerment programs, disability mainstreaming, and job placement opportunities.

“The world has evolved and PWDs are well taken care of; there are innovations that support the group to ensure inclusivity. Let us know our rights as stated in the Constitution so that our voices can be heard. I urge you to take care of yourselves and the environment around you. PWDs are potential people; we are here to walk with you,” she stated.

Expressing her delight, the Coordinator of ACGDMU, Prof. Gladys Mengich pointed out that the Unit recognizes everyone under PWDs. She stated that everyone is able and should be given equal opportunity in the community. “As we honor this day, let me remind you that we have a role to play in society. We are committed to supporting this initiative to bring together the PWDs in the University as well as the community. It is an important day for all of us,” she said.

Further, Prof. Mengich acknowledged that the event is one of the indicators in the performance contract that the Unit has achieved this quarter. She added that this is an important exercise that not only creates awareness of the unit but also promotes the inclusivity of PWDs as required by the government. This provides an avenue for us to work and study together.

According to the Director of Quality Assurance, Prof. Danstone Lilechi who is also the Chairperson of the Disability Mainstreaming Committee, disability comes unexpectedly and aging is a disability that no one can run from. He stated that the event is more of a thanksgiving of what God is doing in our lives. He urged the group to have confidence that they have a special ability and can make it in life just like others. “We all go through challenges in society. This day should be celebrated by everybody, anything can happen in life. PWDs should be accepted and become part of the system. MMUST has employed a number of staff that is disabled. Let us include everyone in our aspects of promotion, appointments, job opportunities, and accessibility of various facilities in the University,” he said. He guaranteed the support of the committee in mainstreaming disability issues.

The Educationist and Psychologist, Ms. Pauline Adhiambo who was representing the Dean of Students, Dr. Bernadette Abwao, tackled areas where the office contributes towards the inclusivity of the PWDs in the institution including; MMUSO leadership, hostels, training staff to assist in sign language, as well as games and sports for the PWDs. “The Office ensures integration of the PWDs in all activities and I believe we shall improve on the service delivery to  support their welfare in the University,” she said.

Sharing his Success story, the Dean (School of Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences and Technology), Prof. Jacob Wakhungu, who is also a member of the Disability Committee, urged the group that they should not carry the burden of disability. “You are abled differently. Do not listen to what the community says about your condition. Have confidence in yourself and be the champions of the PWDs in the community. As you continue with the journey, appreciate yourself and move on,” he said. He advocated for sensitization of disability to the young generation in secondary schools so that they can appreciate disability at an early age.

The Chairperson, Masinde Muliro University Students Association Committee (MMUSAC), Mr. Patrick Ogutu, applauded the University for considering the special group and their inclusion in various events. “There is a need for recognition of the talents of the PWDs and involving them in the decision-making in the University. I believe we shall organize more events to celebrate the special group,” he said.

Also present were; the Representative- MMUSO Special Interests group, and MMUSO Chairperson and Vice Chairperson.

As the University marked Disability Awareness Day, the special group was reminded that they have equal opportunities in the community. The Constitution of Kenya, 2010 (Chapter 4, Article 54) requires a person with a disability to have: access and facilitation in educational institutions, reasonable access to all places, access to device material, and be treated with dignity.

 Additionally, at least 5% of elective and appointive positions are to be for PWDs. This will build their confidence within the University as well as in the community.

MMUST Joins in the Commemoration of the International Women’s Day (IWD)

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo joins the rest of the world in commemorating the International Women’s Day (IWD) themed ‘DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality’. This event graced by the First Lady, of Kakamega County, Prof. Janet Barasa, was held today, 8th March 2023, at the Kakamega Rehabilitation School. This is the day when we recognize the achievements of women globally, and take stock of our progress toward gender equity. It also offers an opportunity to celebrate the positive spirit of feminine power and the dedication to stand on par with men in society.

While gracing the occasion, the First Lady, of Kakamega County, Prof. Janet Barasa encouraged women to rise above their pains and limits to claim what rightfully belongs to them.

“A woman who breaks the barriers is one who ignores the limits. With the changing technology, I urge you fellow women to adapt to the advancements in digital technology so as to increase the awareness of women and girls regarding their rights and civic engagement,” she added.

Speaking during the event, the Vice Chancellor noted that it is important to explore the impacts of the digital gender gap on economic and social inequalities.

“Information has the power to transform lives. As a University, we play a key role in promoting access to information. Let us ignite lasting change by demonstrating the positive impact of female activists in their own communities and beyond,” he said.

Indeed such forums offer an opportunity for women's empowerment in society. The world has shifted towards a counterbalanced society with equal rights for both genders. The suppression of women is no longer a personal matter as stringent laws have been formulated to handle hindrances to the progress of womankind. Developing women's competencies and ensuring equal access to all fields of education widens their talents and perspectives, enabling them to compete for new jobs in the growing green economy on an equal basis with men.

MMUST Wardens Undergo an Intensive Training on Basic Counselling Skills During the Induction of the Newly Appointed Wardens

The Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology’s (MMUST) wardens underwent an intensive two-days training on basic counselling skills, during the induction of the newly appointed wardens. The training, which took place on 7th March to 8th March 2023, was graced by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic and Student Affairs (DVC-ASA), Prof. Hussein Golicha. Thirty-seven (37) wardens were equipped with basic counselling skills in an effort to enhance their central role of safeguarding and maintaining student welfare in their different areas of residence. The training was organized by the Office of Dean of Students.

Speaking during the event, Prof. Golicha congratulated the newly appointed wardens, stressing that wardenship is a very sensitive position that is key to the overall welfare of students including their academic progress. He urged them to stay vigilant and commit to their mandate of providing regular guidance and mentorship to the students.

“To carry out your mandate with competence, it is crucial that you have a clear understanding of the relevant University policies and procedures focussing on the administration of hostels. These should be communicated clearly to hostel owners and students living in areas under your jurisdiction. Besides this, it is important that you also understand how to handle issues of discipline as well as emergencies in the hostels both within and outside the University,” said Prof. Golicha.

Additionally, Prof. Golicha advised the wardens to build and maintain a positive working relationship with both students and hostel owners, asking them to be accessible and approachable by the students. He challenged them to network with other departments such as the Office of the Dean of Students, Security Department and Health Department.

The Dean of Students, Dr. Benardatte Abwao noted that students face many challenges with regard to their accommodation. She emphasized on the roles of the wardens in the students’ residences, saying that they should endeavour to provide a considerate and attentive pastoral care to the students.

The Chairman Wardens, Dr. Dennis Omaiyo commended the University management and the Office of Dean of Students for the training, stating that wardens are involved to a larger extent in shaping the campus life experience of the students.

“This training will help enhance our effectiveness as we handle the daily issues our students face,” stated Dr. Omaiyo

It is worth noting that the training involved a number of presentations including ‘Common Challenges Faced by University Students with Regard to Accommodation’- Dr. Rose Opiyo; ‘Basic Counselling Skills’- Ms. Pauline Adhiambo; ‘Alcohol and Drug Abuse Interventions in MMUST’- Dr. Dennis Omaiyo; ‘Role of Wardens in the Provision of Efficient Accommodation Services to Students’- Dr. Noel Malanda; ‘Recognize and Respond to Potential Security Threats in Students Accommodation’- Dr. Julius Mabia and Conflict Resolution Strategies’- Ms. Linda Omenya.

Research indicates that it is the primary responsibility of any institution to ensure that systems and work force are in place to promote and support the wellbeing of students when at school or involved in school activities. It is also no secret that learning and wellbeing are inseparable as students learn best when their wellbeing is optimised. We commend MMUST for demonstrating an explicit commitment to the wellbeing of its students.

MMUST Efforts to Combat Jigger Infestation in Western Region Intensify as University Participates in National Jiggers Awareness Day

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology has intensified its efforts to combat jigger infestation in the Western region of Kenya. On Friday, 3rd March, 2023, a group of staff and students participated in the National Jiggers Awareness Day by offering volunteer services to the residents of Khwisero Sub-County in Kakamega County. The event, themed ‘Jigger Awareness and Elimination is Our Responsibility,’ was organized in conjunction with various organizations including the Ministry of Health, the County Government of Kakamega, Saraya Kenya, the Africa Institute of Health and Development, as well as Ahadi Kenya Trust.

The 2023 National Jiggers Awareness Day attracted notable personalities in the Government, such as the Principal Secretary State Department for Public Health and Professional Studies, Dr. Josephine Mburu, the Deputy Governor of Kakamega County, H.E Hon. Ayub Savula, Minister of Health Services Kakamega County, Dr. Benard Wesonga, the Chief Officer of Health Services Kakamega County, and Directors from several organizations.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Benard Wesonga stated that MMUST, as the biggest institution of higher learning in Kakamega County, should take lead in conducting research on the jigger menace. Subsequently, Dr. Dennis Ochieno, a Senior Lecturer and Researcher at MMUST’s Department of Biological Sciences, called on all organizations present during the event to build strong sustainable partnerships in the fight against jigger infestation. “MMUST is ready to work together with the County Government of Kakamega, as well as the larger health and education sector, in ensuring that the jigger menace is dealt with,” added Dr. Ochieno.

A total of about one hundred and six (106) patients received treatment on that day. The individuals comprised of school going children, who were the majority, the youth and the elderly.

MMUST staff present during the exercise were; Dean, School of Public Health, Biomedical Sciences and Technology (SPHBS&T), Prof Edwin Wamukoya, Chairperson of the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Mr. Fidelis Mambo, Dr. Sabella Kiprono, Dr. Godfrey Gitonga, Ms. Jayne Munyao, Ms. Carolyn Odori, Mr. Eliphalet Otunga, Ms. Anne Onyando and Ms. Lilian Owala.

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology has continually taken part in anti-jigger campaigns, while its researchers undertake studies in an effort to eradicate jigger infestation. It is evident that the University will do whatever it takes to end this menace, including the involvement of other stakeholders, as well as community outreach.
